How it works

Your brain already knows how to heal

After a distressing experience, the brain can “freeze” a memory with its original images, emotions, and body sensations intact. That’s why a trigger today can flood you with feelings from years ago.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation ( gentle, alternating eye movements, taps, or tones) to help your brain access and reprocess that stuck memory, the same way it naturally processes experiences during REM sleep. The memory remains, but the distress attached to it fades.

It’s a targeted approach that often reduces distress and strengthens internal resources faster than talk therapy alone, though it’s not a quick fix, and the work moves at the pace your nervous system needs.

Bilateral stimulation

Eye movements, tactile taps, or auditory tones engage both hemispheres of the brain.

The 8-phase protocol

A structured, gold-standard framework guides each stage of the work safely.

Lasting reprocessing

You keep the memory, but it no longer hijacks your body and reactions.

What EMDR treats

More than trauma alone

EMDR reaches the everyday fears and reactions whose roots trace back further than you might expect, not just single, obvious traumas.

Questions

EMDR therapy FAQs

What is EMDR therapy?+
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that taps into how the brain naturally processes and stores information. Using bilateral stimulation (alternating eye movements, taps, or sounds) to help you reprocess difficult or traumatic memories so they lose their grip on the present.
What can EMDR help with?+
EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, but it also helps with social anxiety, panic and phobias, performance anxiety, grief and loss, the effects of chronic illness, and recovery from sexual assault or childhood abuse.
How long does EMDR take?+
It depends on the complexity of what you're working through. A single-incident trauma may take around 8 or more sessions, while the effects of childhood abuse can take months or longer. If you want to move faster, an EMDR intensive can consolidate this work into 1-3 focused days.
Do you accept insurance for EMDR therapy?+
Yes, Rachael is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi and Aetna commercial plans for traditional weekly therapy. Superbills are also available for weekly sessions.
